Rust and native rewrites go after slow incumbents

Firenook, a Rust reimplementation of the Firebase emulators, claims 40x faster writes and 10x less RAM, and commenters said Google has neglected the local dev experience for years. A post arguing Blender's UI and runtime is much faster than GPUI got enthusiastic replies from people using Rust with GPUI who keep hitting missing behavior and want battle-tested UI instead. Servo posted its September update and commenters just want it to win, with someone asking whether vibe-coded contributions are allowed. Kugelblitz, a Mac-native Google Earth alternative, drew nostalgia jabs about Google Earth running fine on a 2009 Pentium 4.

The pattern: the cheapest wedge into a developer market is to take a neglected official tool, rewrite it in a fast systems language, and publish a benchmark number. Nobody needs a new idea. They need the old one to stop being slow.

The skepticism is about maturity. Replacing a UI toolkit or a browser engine is years of edge cases, and 'faster' only wins if behavior matches.

So what?

Look for official dev tools from big vendors that are slow, memory hungry or ignored. A compatible, faster drop-in with a clear benchmark is a credible launch, and the Firenook commenters even asked about replacing production services next.
