Dev tools and libraries you depend on keep disappearing
Conductor announced it is joining Meta and its cloud product shuts down over the next few months. Commenters called the migration timeline very aggressive, one said they were losing their favorite IDE, and others asked what to move to. Separately, the future maintenance of Mbed TLS is in question, which commenters said will hit projects built on Zephyr, including products that were freshly migrated to it.
The Mbed TLS thread had a notable reaction. One commenter said that with AI you can generate a pretty good TLS library in a day if supporting only the latest TLS version is acceptable. Another confident take was that the community will come up with a solution. Anthropic cutting off OpenClaw use on Claude Code subscriptions is the same shape of problem from the vendor side.
The pattern here: a tool you built your workflow or product on can be absorbed, abandoned or restricted on a few months' notice. The new twist is that AI makes rewriting a dependency feel cheap, which makes people tolerate that risk more than they should, especially for security code like TLS.
So what?
Treat any acqui-hired dev tool as having a shutdown date, and keep your workflow portable. For security-critical dependencies like TLS, an AI-generated rewrite is not a substitute for a maintained, audited library. Budget for the migration instead.
