Apple announced Siri Recaps, which records ambient audio and transcribes high-level notes from Apple Watch. The HN thread moved fast from curiosity to alarm. One commenter said their company will implement a no-watches policy in the office going forward. Others pointed out that Granola and a wave of AI meeting tools already do this from laptops, so the hardware delta may be smaller than it appears.
The deeper tension: ambient audio capture is becoming a standard feature pitch, not a niche capability. Apple framing it as private and on-device is doing a lot of work in the press, but enterprise IT teams are treating any always-on microphone device as a policy problem regardless of where the compute happens.
The iPhone 18 Pro thread ran separately and mostly landed flat, with commenters noting it is 'certainly an iPhone' with few compelling new features. The Apple product cycle is generating less excitement than the security implications of the features being shipped.

If you sell into enterprise or regulated industries, the wave of ambient recording devices is about to force explicit device policies from your customers. This is both a product risk (your sales cycles get longer) and a product opportunity if you build compliance or audit tooling. The 'private and on-device' framing will not satisfy enterprise security teams without third-party verification.
