Formal Verification Is Quietly Going Mainstream

Two formal verification stories landed today. Palomar is a new registry of Lean-verified mathematics, essentially an index of proofs that have been mechanically checked for correctness. A separate post dug into missed alarm bugs in a formal verification tool itself, and commenters praised the author John Regehr for the 'constant grind' of improving these tools as an 'unrewarding but worthy calling.' The FlyWire connectome desktop app also got called 'real AI' by commenters, in pointed contrast to LLM hype.

The thread on Palomar raised the right question: what is the incentive for people to submit verified proofs? The infrastructure is impressive but the contribution flywheel is not yet obvious. The bug-hunting post shows that even the tools used to verify things can have subtle errors, which is humbling but important.

The broader pattern is that formal methods are no longer purely academic. Lean is increasingly used in real software, and the community around verified mathematics is growing. This is slow-moving but directionally significant for anyone building safety-critical systems.
