The thread lit up with counterfactual speculation: if this had existed in the 1980s, Microsoft might be a small shop today. It runs on real hardware and was verified working.
The actual story here is less about retrocomputing nostalgia and more about what it means that you can now ship working systems-level software in a niche, obsolete instruction set with AI assistance. Real-mode x86 assembly is not something many living programmers know well. Claude apparently does.
This connects to a broader pattern of AI enabling work in domains with very few human experts: obscure assembly dialects, legacy codebases, dead languages. The bottleneck used to be finding someone who knew the thing. That bottleneck is softer now.
So what?
AI assistance is most valuable in exactly the places where human expertise is scarcest. If your product or business depends on maintaining or extending legacy systems, the cost of that work just dropped substantially. If you are building AI coding tools, the legacy modernization market is large and underserved.
