Platform wars: everyone wants to be the agent OS
Cloudflare announced 'Cloudflare OS', framing itself as an open platform for agents, apps, and work. HN immediately pushed back on the naming, with multiple commenters asking why companies keep slapping 'OS' on products that are clearly not operating systems. Kenton Varda from Cloudflare weighed in with a defense of the framing. Separately, Celld launched as a self-hosted distributed Durable Objects alternative, explicitly timed to land alongside the Cloudflare OS announcement.
The naming debate is a proxy for a real infrastructure fight. Cloudflare, with its edge network and Durable Objects primitive, is making a serious bid to be the execution and coordination layer for agents at scale. The fact that an open-source alternative to Durable Objects launched the same day is not a coincidence. It signals that the primitives Cloudflare is building around are valuable enough that developers want them without the vendor lock-in.
The Zed DeltaDB thread adds another data point: developer tooling companies are also trying to own coordination and state persistence for agent workflows. The infrastructure layer for agents, meaning where state lives, how agents coordinate, and who controls the runtime, is genuinely contested and unsettled.

The agent execution and state layer is not decided yet.
