NAS and Home Infrastructure: DIY Winning Over Prebuilt
A post on 'Ten Ways NAS Is Getting Enshittified' sparked a thread where the top-voted sentiment was simple: just build your own with Ubuntu and ZFS. The complaints about commercial NAS vendors, proprietary software, soldered RAM, and slow network stacks all pointed in the same direction. A parallel thread on getting 25 Gbps Thunderbolt Ethernet working on a Mac Studio showed that even high-end consumer networking requires serious tinkering to actually hit advertised speeds.
The pattern is familiar from other categories: commercial products optimize for the median user and cut corners in ways that irritate power users, who then route around the product entirely. The difference with NAS is that the DIY alternative is genuinely accessible now. ZFS is stable, Ubuntu is free, and old PC hardware is cheap.
The Thunderbolt Ethernet thread also surfaced a macOS-specific gap: lack of SMB Direct (RDMA) support means macOS can't hit the throughput that the same hardware achieves on Windows or Linux. For anyone running a Mac-heavy office, that's a real ceiling.

For founders building storage or home-lab adjacent products, the customer who used to buy a Synology is increasingly building their own. The opportunity is in the software layer, better management interfaces, easier ZFS setup, smarter backup orchestration, not in selling another box with a proprietary OS that locks them in.
