AI Portability and Data Ownership Are Becoming Real Fights

A piece called 'The session you cannot take with you' laid out a clean argument: users should be able to close an account, export their session, and hand it to a different model. The thread surfaced a sharp technical frustration underneath the philosophical point. Reasoning tokens are not returned in a readable format, and users are forced to resend the entire conversation history every time, even though the provider is already storing it. The combination of no portability and no efficiency is intentional.

This connects directly to the thread on AI aesthetic and the broader mood around AI companies building closed systems. The cynical read in the thread was that 'openness' advocacy here is partly self-serving from people who want switching costs to be lower. The less cynical read is that session portability is the same fight that took a decade in banking (open banking) and is now arriving for AI.

The key bit: providers who hold your conversation history and refuse to make it portable are making a moat out of your own data. Founders building on top of these APIs inherit that constraint and pass it to their users.

So what?

If your product's value is partly in accumulated context or conversation history, you need a clear answer to 'what happens if the underlying model changes or the provider raises prices?' Build your own session layer, store conversation history you control, and do not let a provider own the relationship with your users' data.
