x402: charging agents per request is becoming real infrastructure
A thread on 'Monetization Gateway' via Cloudflare and the x402 protocol is generating genuine interest. The core idea: put a micropayment layer in front of any web resource or API so that AI agents, not just human users, can be charged per request automatically. The Linux Foundation is now backing x402 as a standard, announced at MCP Dev Summit.
The key insight buried in the comments is the framing flip. Several people are less interested in charging human users and much more interested in charging AI scrapers and agents. The current dynamic where AI companies vacuum up API calls and web content for free while charging their own users handsomely is increasingly seen as untenable. x402 offers a technical path to fixing that, and the Cloudflare integration means the adoption surface is enormous.
The obvious friction point, also noted in the thread, is that end users don't have stablecoin wallets, and the UX for micropayments is still unsolved for humans. But for agent-to-agent billing, wallets are just software, so the B2B and agent economy use case is far more tractable than the consumer case.

If you run an API or content-heavy product that AI agents are hitting for free, x402 gives you a credible near-term path to monetizing that traffic. The Cloudflare integration lowers the implementation bar significantly. Watch the MCP ecosystem: agent-native billing infrastructure is being standardized now, and the founders who build with it early will have a pricing model that latecomers won't.
