Locked-down devices vs. user-owned hardware

Motorola announced the Signature 27 with official GrapheneOS support, priced at $1,599. Commenters liked the idea and balked at both the design and the price, with one saying their second-hand Pixel 8 does the job for a tenth of the cost. Meanwhile the Dutch 'idealist' bank ASN started blocking non-Google Android including GrapheneOS, and commenters pointed out N26 does the same. One user keeps a refurbished iPhone in a drawer purely for banking apps.

This is the key bit: a hardware maker is finally selling the privacy-OS phone, while banks are using device attestation to shut those phones out of core services. The same dynamic shows up in the Hackintosh thread, where people want macOS on non-Apple hardware mainly for headless build machines, and in the Cloudflare-style blocking of niche browsers in older threads.

Some commenters defend the banks on security grounds, and note that Bunq still working with GrapheneOS says more about Bunq's own posture than about ASN being unusual.

So what?

If you build fintech or anything gated by device checks, you are choosing to exclude a vocal, technical user segment. Decide on purpose whether Play Integrity-style attestation is worth the support tickets and the bad press.
