Python tooling is consolidating under an AI lab
Astral's uv and ty are being tied closer together. The most-upvoted theme in the thread was a worry that blending two separate tools is "shipping the org chart." ty works fine on non-uv projects, and uv already has opinionated quirks and a custom lockfile. One commenter said they were glad that OpenAI's acquisition of Astral "had seemingly no negative impact" on its products.
That aside matters. Astral, one of the best-loved Python tooling companies, is now owned by OpenAI, and users are watching for any sign of strategy drift.
The counterpoint: most people still love uv. The complaint is about packaging and coupling, not quality.
So what?
If your stack depends on a venture-backed or acquired open-source tool, keep an exit path and avoid deep coupling. If you build dev tools, keep modular pieces usable alone. That's what users here are defending.
