Meta's $25B New Mexico penalty reopens the tort reform fight
Meta was ordered to pay a $25B penalty in New Mexico over the Cambridge Analytica case. One top comment wants tort reform, arguing that nuclear verdicts raise insurance prices and cost every American hundreds to thousands of dollars. Another says the original fine was much higher, so this is closer to Meta's hopes than the plaintiffs'.
A third commenter notes that when the EU fined US companies a few billion euros, there was jingoistic outrage in the US, and says this one will be interesting to watch. The split is between people who see runaway verdicts as a hidden tax and people who see data-misuse penalties as overdue.
So what?
State-level data and privacy enforcement is now producing penalties big enough to threaten a company. If you collect user data, treat consent and third-party sharing as a balance-sheet risk, not a compliance checkbox. Check what your insurance actually covers.
