AI labs trade cloud deals while tightening their grip
OpenAI models are coming to Google Cloud, with a footnote that Microsoft remains OpenAI's primary cloud partner. Commenters note that every big player now says out loud that they're all doing AI together, and ask how OpenAI can trust Google not to distill its models. OpenAI also released a CLI, and the first reaction is confusion over when to use it instead of Codex, plus a warning that OpenAI deprecates almost everything within two years, sometimes without formal notice.
On the other side, an older thread has Anthropic cutting Claude Code subscriptions off from OpenClaw because third-party tools put an outsized strain on its systems. Users answered that it's what they paid for, and the thread argues about rate limits and a money grab.
The pattern: model makers are friendly at the infrastructure layer and territorial at the product layer. Whoever owns the harness wants to own the customer.
So what?
Don't build deep on a single lab's tooling or subscription terms. Keep your agent layer model-agnostic, as one commenter's agent-agnostic MCP approach does, so a deprecation or a pricing change doesn't force a rewrite.
