Coding agents are leaving a mess on developers' machines

The Codex Desktop issue is blunt: it continuously generates Crashpad pending dumps, and one user lost 330GB of disk to it. The top comment asks why a company claiming superintelligence can't triage its GitHub issues. Other commenters described their own versions. Codex created thousands of screenshot artifacts in its worktrees. Another traced disk pressure to using git worktrees for everything, since each one duplicates dependencies and build output.

The pattern: agent workflows multiply files, worktrees and caches, and the tools do no cleanup. Nobody budgeted for this. It is the same shape as the early Docker disk-bloat complaints, except agents run all day and in parallel.

The frustration is partly about attention. OpenAI ships agent products quickly, and bug reports about basic resource hygiene sit unanswered.

So what?

If you build agent tooling, cleanup and resource limits are a real feature, and a differentiator right now. If you run agents yourself, put disk quotas and artifact pruning in your setup before it becomes an incident.
