Robotics money flows, with a side of cynicism
Germany's RobCo hit a $1B valuation (49963366), making it Europe's new robotics unicorn. The HN thread was thin and sarcastic: 'cries in dystopian,' hype for an inevitable NYSE IPO, and a joke about a Russian scam. Nobody engaged with the product or the numbers.
The Huawei and Qualcomm patent license (49961861) drew similar distrust. Commenters pointed to the DOJ's old trade secret theft indictment and asked why the 5G race mattered so much if it was just given away. The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (49963094) went the other way: people compared optogenetics to the transistor for biology, and argued about Miesenböck being excluded.
The pattern: big-money hardware headlines get less thoughtful discussion here than the hard-science and engineering stories do. The audience is skeptical of valuations and fond of basic discoveries.
So what?
A unicorn announcement doesn't earn credibility with this crowd. Technical depth and a clear customer story do. If you raise in robotics, expect the community to ask what's real before it asks what's big.
