Cloudflare keeps moving into the middle of everything

Cloudflare announced a Web Search API (49963171) with a Zero Data Retention commitment and a verified-bot crawling requirement. One commenter called that the most interesting part because of the tension between AI search products and publishers. Others asked the obvious question: why not use the search providers directly, and does Cloudflare need to be in the middle of everything?

Older threads in the feed show why that question has teeth. Docker pulls failed in Spain because Cloudflare IPs get blocked during La Liga matches (47738883). Pale Moon and other non-mainstream browsers keep getting caught by Cloudflare's human checks (42953508).

The pattern: Cloudflare is turning a CDN position into a toll booth for AI crawling and search. That is a good business, and it makes the rest of the web more dependent on it. Developers like the pitch but fear the concentration.

So what?

If you run a content site, Cloudflare is becoming the place where you set the terms for AI crawlers. If you build AI products that fetch the web, expect to need verified-bot status and plan for blocks. Don't make one intermediary the only path to your data or your users.
