The top responses are not ironic: a 51-year-old electrical engineer says AI gave him the confidence to become a solo founder. A parent with young kids says Claude lets him grind through a backlog of ideas in minutes between tasks. Someone with bipolar disorder describes it as an accessibility tool that removes the frustration spikes that previously derailed them.
The counterpoint is also present and honest: one commenter spent two days using Claude instead of coding and found it deeply unfulfilling, comparing it to getting an A on a test you didn't take. The 'If AI coding is lowering your code quality, you're not managing quality right' thread argues the opposite, that poor AI output is a management and process failure, not an AI failure.
The pattern here is that AI coding tools are genuinely expanding who can build, not just speeding up existing developers. That is a different and more significant claim than the productivity-multiplier narrative.
So what?
The addressable market for your developer tool just got larger. People who previously couldn't build are now building, and they have different needs around guidance, error explanation, and workflow than professional developers. That is an underserved segment worth designing for explicitly.
